If you would have tried to tell me about a non-toxic cleaner before I started working with ecological products, I would have rolled my eyes and moved on. Such is the problem with the public perception of ecology and sustainability. If it isn’t bad for me it can’t taste good. If it isn’t toxic it probably doesn’t work. If it’s not a gas guzzler it probably has no power and so on and so forth.
Well these are all either myths, or problems which are being overcome as technology improves. Now in terms of green floor cleaning products, I would first like give you a list of the sorts of chemicals used in most the ones on the market. ( I’m not even going to mention the liquid death that goes into the alternative.)
The Green Floor Cleaner Rundown
Enzyme Floor Cleaner: Like all enzyme cleaners they use a type of protein called an enzyme which naturally occurs in our foods, our bodies, and our environment. The enzymes in cleaning products are designed to break up the grime. Most enzymes are safe on a variety of surfaces and even fabrics. They do not bleach or stain or have fragrance. Enzymes are a truly natural means to clean your floors.
Orange Oil Floor Cleaner: Citrus oil is a powerful degreaser and works especially well in the kitchen. Citrus oils don’t strip protective sealants the way many chemical products do, and they dissolve hard-to-remove stains in a flash. I would recommend this as a green wood floor cleaner
Mineral Salts/Baking Soda Floor Cleaner: You may have used common table salt and ice to scour a scaly coffee pot. Baking soda is common in detergents and even toothpaste. Some salts have been found especially effective on soap scum so I would recommend salt and baking soda be used as a green tile cleaner.
Plant Surfactant Floor Cleaner: Comes from ‘surface acting agent’ and literally means an agent that acts on surface tension. For floor cleaning purposes, it breaks up soil, dirt, and grime. Plant-based surfactants are safe and can be very effective.
Do It For Your Kids…Do It For Your Dog…
So there you have it any and all of these are either completely non-toxic or drastically less toxic then the alternative. This is of particular interest to folks such as myself who have children and/or pets that do things like get into the stuff under the sink or lick the floor. Remember conventional products contain thousands of different chemicals largely untested, and definitely untested when you start combining them. (Say you clean the toilet and then the floor around the toilet…) So there is no telling what the long term effects are- on yourself, let alone the environment.
